Spotlight on Student: Malik Whitby

The Multi-Media Training Institute (MMTI) provides at-risk youths with skill-related workshops to help them in future endeavors, such as Digital Graphics, Radio Podcast Journalism, IT, Personal Development, Financial Literacy, Video Production and Editing, and Technical Theater. Among the “stars” of the workshop is one of their students, Malik Whitby, who was enrolled in courses in Digital Graphics, Radio Podcast Journalism, IT, Personal Development, and Financial Literacy. Suddenly, his instructors noticed him not because he performed well but because of his behavior during class hours. Malik tends to be easily distracted, engaged in conversations with his friends on the side, and is highly influenced by his environment. His lack of focus in the workshop affected his performance, leading him to perform poorly. To help him, the MMTI administrator spoke with him and offered guidance and support.

He was invited  to the studio for discussion on him dropping IT workshop. At the studio, he watched other students in action in Video Production and Editing workshop and asked if he could join, he was allowed to join. It was as if a light ball was switched on, and Malik showed great interest, as if he found his niche. After that, he started to excel in all his workshops, especially Video Production and Editing, and Technical Theatre. He was the first intern to complete the Coursera Modules in Financial Literacy and Personal Development workshop. Thus, he will receive his certificates from Arizona State University. The shift in his chosen workshop highlights the effectiveness of the change, as it caught his attention and sparked his interest. Being a part of Video Production, Editing, and Technical Theater gave him enjoyment, where helped him stay focused. He was able to communicate with the instructors, and his performance improved positively. Proving to himself that he can showcase his “star potential.” He then asked to be a part of an actual job in video production and editing to apply the skills and knowledge he has learned in some MMTI events. In return, he was appropriately compensated based on the service he provided.

To conclude, the support given to him, combined with his willingness to learn, made him an accomplished intern. Malik’s performance challenges were not due to his lack of ability but rather incompatibility between his interests and focus. It was proven that when distraction was replaced with focus, Malik excelled. Malik’s distraction led him to perform poorly, but his renewed traction leads him to new opportunities and a successful path.

Thank you Malik, you made us all proud!

After School Program: Field Trip

The MMTI After-School Program has been providing students with enriching experiences that extend beyond the classroom. One of the highlights of our program is the opportunity for students to participate in field trips that are thoughtfully designed to complement and enhance the workshops we offer. These excursions provide a practical and hands-on learning experience, allowing students to explore real-world applications of the skills and knowledge they acquire during our sessions

Recently, our students had the incredible opportunity to visit ‘Protecting America’s Secrets: Securing Our Nation’s Critical Information.’ This unique experience immersed them in an environment where they could better understand the importance of safeguarding sensitive information. As they roamed through the facility, students were able to witness firsthand the various processes and technologies used to protect our nation’s critical infrastructure. The field trip not only reinforced their learning but also inspired them to think about potential career paths and the broader implications of their studies.
