ABOUT
About | 43 Years of Inspiring Impact at the Multi-Media Training Institute
Founded in 1982 by visionary educator and community leader Lyn Dyson, the Multi-Media Training Institute (MMTI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in the heart of Washington, D.C.’s vibrant Ward 7. For over 40 years, MMTI has been a cornerstone for youth and young adults seeking to explore their creativity, build professional skills, and find their voice.
We believe that a strong voice can change a life. Through hands-on training in media arts—including video and radio production, journalism, technical theater, arts administration, digital marketing, and job readiness. MMTI equips the next generation with the tools, confidence, and vision to lead in their communities and beyond.
Mission Statement
MMTI is dedicated to empowering youth through hands-on workshops that cultivate critical thinking, creative expression, and practical skills. We foster an inclusive environment where young people can grow with confidence, thereby preparing them for success in both the arts and their broader professional lives. Furthermore, through original productions that reflect and celebrate shared histories, we bring communities together, inspire dialogue, promote understanding, and create a lasting impact.
Vision Statement
Over the next three years, the Multi-Media Training Institute (MMTI) envisions launching a vibrant Media Multi-Cultural Center—a creative hub featuring state-of-the-art training facilities and a 300-seat theater. This center will serve as a dynamic space for media arts education, cultural programming, and community empowerment.
Building on over 40 years of impact, we will expand our reach by hosting workshops in cities across the country, creating a national network of media training programs in partnership with local organizations. These efforts aim to equip young people with real-world skills in storytelling, production, and leadership.
As part of our growth, we will launch a nationwide tour of Campaign ’72, MMTI’s original theatrical production about Shirley Chisholm’s historic presidential run—continuing our legacy of blending arts, history, and social change. We are equally committed to producing powerful stories that honor other iconic figures whose legacies have shaped and strengthened our communities.
In addition, we will embark on a national tour of Zora Neale Hurston, reaffirming our dedication to bringing these transformative stories to audiences nationwide.
MMTI is more than a training program; it’s a launchpad for the next generation of storytellers, leaders, and change-makers.

Lyn Dyson
Founder of MMTI
He is the founder and driving force behind this non-profit organization. Since establishing it in 1982, he has devoted his life to using the arts as a powerful tool for empowerment, education, and social change.
A passionate educator, producer, actor, and community activist, Dyson recognized the urgent need for a space where young people—particularly those in underserved communities—could develop creative skills, critical thinking, and professional discipline. His guiding belief that “when you give youth a voice, you give them power” has shaped MMTI’s programs for more than four decades. Under his leadership, the organization has not only prepared countless students for professional careers but has also helped them see the world through a more confident and informed lens.
Beyond the classroom, Dyson is an accomplished producer of film and stage whose works frequently honor cultural icons and pivotal moments in African American history. His vision extends well beyond the stage; he is committed to creating a Media Multi-Cultural Center that will serve as a vibrant hub for training, performance, and cross-cultural exchange.
Ultimately, his legacy is one of opportunity, creativity, and community impact—empowering generations of young leaders to step forward, speak up, and claim their place in the world.
